Put chemistry on the calendar in 2011!

Next year is the International Year of Chemistry (IYC), and to celebrate, the American Chemical Society is encouraging people to join the fun in publicizing its importance.

Here’s how: Submit ideas for your favorite element, compound, discovery, chemist, or chemistry innovation to www.chemistry2011.org, by the end of June 2010.

Examples of chemistry’s impact to improve people’s lives are practically any place you look, where chemists are researching ozone in the environment, enhancing national security by developing “green” decontaminants for terrorist attack sites, or improving health, by conducting pioneering cancer research or protecting against eye disease by exploring benefits of green tea…

The list doesn’t stop there, and we call upon you to give us some other notable examples of how chemistry has transformed lives.

Whatever your favorite idea is, it should fall into one of four categories:

  •     Energy
  •     Environment
  •     Materials
  •     Health

Through the IYC-2011 initiative “365: Chemistry for Life,” a different aspect of chemistry will be highlighted every day on www.acs.org. Anyone may participate. Selected submissions will receive recognition and an IYC-2011 pin and t-shirt.  For more ideas on how to celebrate the International Year of Chemistry, visit www.acs.org/iyc2011 and www.chemistry2011.org.
